Rebuilding Stability & Balance
Enduring Beauty by the Water’s Edge
When a failing wooden retaining wall began to lean toward the lake, the homeowners of this Appleton island property knew it was time to act. They wanted more than a quick fix, they needed a lasting solution that would protect their home, honor the landscape, and enhance the natural beauty of their waterfront setting.
In the fall of 2024, our team at Van Zeeland Nursery & Landscape designed and constructed a multi-level retaining wall system using High Format Grand Ledge and Kodah wetcast concrete block. These materials were chosen not only for their strength, but for their ability to reflect the texture and warmth of natural stone, blending seamlessly with the surrounding oaks and shoreline.
Working carefully around two mature oak trees, we shaped the new terraces to preserve their roots and maintain the sense of place the homeowners loved. Lighting was added throughout, accenting the craftsmanship and creating a welcoming glow along the water after sunset.
Rebuilding Stability & Balance
The design included:
A custom, multi-level retaining wall replacing the original wood structure
Integrated stone staircase and hillside path for natural flow
Preservation of two mature oak trees within the design
Coordination with local experts to meet waterfront and environmental regulations
Use of durable High Format Grand Ledge and Kodah wetcast concrete block
Subtle lighting to highlight form, texture, and evening ambience
What began as a structural concern became an opportunity to reimagine the landscape, transforming a problem into a lasting statement of craftsmanship, strength, and beauty where water meets stone.
